Don't mind me, I'm just hanging out at the hors d'oeuvre table looking awkward and watching people dance.

Is it just me or has this site become a Believer/Atheist warzone?
by BU2B ini enjoy the odd thread about evoloution vs creation, etc but lately it seems that a large percentage of threads here devolve into fighting between atheists and theists and distract from what most of us here see eye to eye on, the wt and related things.
i wish things could be more civil here and fr people to realize that people will never see eye to eye on the topic.
it gets so tiring to see the contstant bickring and fighting on those threads.. they seem to go on page after page but very little of substance is discussed seeing as the existence or non existence of a god can be proven by anyone.

Born in, left in my teens, didn't dunk. The first time I married, I married my (worldly) college girlfriend. We were both right out of college. I was 22, she was 21. Big mistake. Looking back on things more than 20 years later, I realized I was grasping wildly about for a replacement family. We ended up having two daughters before she collapsed in a ugly bipolar train wreck. Advice here: Don't marry your first girlfriend or boyfriend. Don't marry early. Marriage before 30 should be illegal. Cohabitate, have sex, try different people but for Pete's sake don't commit to something when you have no basis for comparison.
Fast forward to about ten years ago. Two years after my divorce, just when I was starting to feel ready to date again, I met a redhead at the local bookstore. We couldn't stop talking to each other and ended up trading stories sitting in her car until the police pulled up behind us at 2:30 in the morning in the parking lot. :/ After several years, we married on the anniversary of the day we met at the bookstore.
We still can't stop talking to each other. Friends think of us as Carl and Ellie from the movie "Up".
My JW past is a complete mystery to her. She wants to understand but there is no way she can wrap her head around it. I can't say I blame her.

Finally sending a letter to the elders today

dear sirs:.
i attended the xxxx congregation in the mid-1980s as a teenaged unbaptized publisher.

Just an update: I haven't forgotten any of you, I just haven't received a reply yet. (And may never, for that matter).
I feel like I ought to start an office pool on when a letter might come...

Letter I wrote to the person the caused me to be disfellowshipped
by jwfacts ina thread on another forum reminded me of a letter i wrote to the person that went to the elders and started the proceedings to have me disfellowshipped.
i stopped believing in the religion when i was 25 but continued going for about ten years.
i finally started to fade at 35, but about 6 months after i had stopped going to meetings, a person wrote a letter to the elders about my website, which at the time was anonymous.

Fantastic. This is such a great example of turning the other cheek. Unfortunately, many JWs might conclude (after some initial shock) that the attempt was hard-hearted irony rather than genuine appreciation and exultation. Apostates, being tools of Satan the Deceiver, are incapable of love and Christian warmth. Or so I've heard.

The elephant in the room swishes its tail
by Suraj Khan inmy believing mother, with whom i've recently reconnected after twenty years, and i had a mostly pleasant conversation this weekend.
i had planned to visit one of these weekends before the weather gets rough and she called to warn me away this weekend - a vicious storm was coming through.. she mentioned that my uber-dub sister and her family would also be there.
i carefully and calmly explained that being there at the same time would not be a very good thing.

My believing mother, with whom I've recently reconnected after twenty years, and I had a mostly pleasant conversation this weekend. I had planned to visit one of these weekends before the weather gets rough and she called to warn me away this weekend - a vicious storm was coming through.
She mentioned that my UBER-DUB sister and her family would also be there. I carefully and calmly explained that being there at the same time would Not Be A Very Good Thing. This is the sister who briefly friended me on Facebook and then melted down when I posted a highlighted Watchtower article on shunning along with some rather tart commentary by me casting aspersions on the practice.
"Well, I guess they* hope that people will come back to Jehovah's love," my mother offered. I mentioned that quite a bit of shunning is based on rumors and illustrated the point that my UBER-DUB sister believed I was cast out of the congregation for fornication (untrue). And then I said, "I am not trying to debate you on this and we'll move on. Iiiii'm not saying anything more."
But of course, once you get a Witness talking about The Truth(tm), the cult mindset kicks in and nothing else matters. My mother spent the next ten minutes lamenting the fact that the congregation is mostly elderly and shrinking. They're down to 30 people now. "But," she added brightly, "we just had So-and-so's son baptized. He's ten or twelve."
"Mom," I said, "do you really think a child is able to dedicate his life to Jehovah at ten or twelve?" I asked, possibly a bit too incredulously.
Long silence.
"Iiiii'm not going to say more," I finally stammered, "I do not want to lose my family again, but...good God, Mom."
Thankfully, we disengaged from the topic and managed to reschedule my visit this fall. I've got a care package set up for her and ready to go. My heart says lead a life of quiet example. Don't push this.
But I think we both saw the elephant in the room at last. And it winked at us.

* Curious pronoun choice here, now that I think about it. She didn't say "we". Interesting!

New Article on BEARDS and Attire of Jehovah's Witnesses
by jwfacts ini have had requests to add an article about beards and jehovah's witnesses.
it is interesting that there is virtually no statement that says a witness cannot have a beard, yet universally they do not have beards.
i have scoured quotes from all the threads on jwn, all references to beard on the cd watchtower library, and copies of elders letters that i have.

by doinmypart inthe nov 2013 km contains an article that is ridiculous in its level of minutae.. they focus on the word "because".
they tell jws to use the word "because" when explaining why they're at the homeowner's door.

Honest survey question on effectiveness of 'apostacy'
by Simon init seems like lots of people have big dreams of 'destroying the watchtower'.
it's usually linked to a story of how they were wronged and want some revenge.
do these 'in your face' attempts to convince people that the truth isn't the truth really have an effect?.

Shouting matches don't work. Living a life of quiet example might, but Witnesses are trained to be blind to the world - especially the goodness in it. How many times did we hear stories how crime and violence are increasing in 'this wicked world' (hint: both are decreasing)? On the other hand, how many times were stories of non-JWs human compassion held up as a positive example? Rarely if ever. The Organization depends on a black vs. white, us vs. them, evil vs. good polarization and has no compunctions whatsoever about misrepresenting the outside world. To say nothing of refusing to participate in Jesus Christ's mandate to aid those in need regardless of their faith...

time to reboot jwn??? attn. tech49, formerlongtime elder, others.
by nowwhat? infirst of all let me start by saying who am i to judge, but... i understand jwn has completely evolved over the years, but what i would like to see a forum that has current members and former jw's that still live by bible principles and respect the bible, but are not afraid to call out the watchtower on their practices and revised history.
i think quality posters as mentioned above, after venting their frustrations and experiences realize this website is taken over by athiests.
and punk kids-[ see similar post.
